De*CIDE*

Homicide, suicide, fratricide, matricide, regicide, genocide … decide? If this were an SAT question the one that doesn’t fit would be ‘decide,’ … right Why? Because deciding doesn’t involve killing … or does it. A leader who decides to go to war is killing people, a cancer patient who decides to end treatment is likely killing themselves … There are many decisions one might consider life or death. But these decisions are not specifically referring to death and the vast majority of our decisions have nothing to do with death. But the ‘cide’ in ‘decide’ has to be there for a reason. Maybe this: Ever wonder where you’d be or what would have happened had you decided something different? We all have. But that’s all we can do. That person, that world around them, is dead. We killed them. And decisions are the death we have to live with.
